In Jamaica, you can make a meaningful contribution to local communities as a volunteer on the Building High School Special. This project is based in areas just outside Mandeville and involves a group of volunteers working together on a several different building and renovation activities.
The first major focus of the project is to construct ventilated pit toilets in communities where there are no basic toilet facilities whatsoever. This is a crucial activity, as improved sanitation will help prevent the spread of disease among the local people and promote better hygiene practices.
You will also participate in the renovation of houses for the elderly and the disadvantaged. Their own homes are in a deplorable condition, making daily life much more difficult and uncomfortable. By assisting with roof and ceiling repairs, replacing doors, painting, cleaning, and doing other minor renovation work, you will be making a hugely significant impact on their lives.
In addition, the group will contribute to at least one building outreach activity. This will involve helping to improve living conditions in underprivileged communities by making minor repairs and giving buildings a fresh coat of paint.
During your time abroad in Jamaica, you will live with a local host family and experience Jamaican hospitality and culture firsthand. You might even be able to pick up some of the local language, Patois!
Over the weekend, you will go on a trip with the other volunteers and Projects Abroad staff to one of the island's famous beaches or caves. This will be coupled with a rich immersion into the music, dance, food, and other cultural aspects for which Jamaica is known.
