Jamaica is known for its relaxing island atmosphere and beloved reggae music, but the country also faces difficult social problems, including a large orphan population due to factors like AIDS and teen pregnancy. Volunteers on the Care in Jamaica Alternative Spring Break Trip work at orphanages or care centers supporting the children and local staff and helping make the home a positive atmosphere.
Volunteers are involved with the various daily activities of the homes, including helping with education and homework, preparing for meals, making sure all the children have suitable clothing and access to bathroom facilities, and playing and socializing with the children. Additionally, the many hands of a group can make a difference by helping with the regular upkeep of the home and cleaning and beautification projects.
The Care in Jamaica group lives with host families in Mandeville in the hills of Manchester Parish or the busy coastal town of Montego Bay. At the end of the week you will be rewarded for your hard work with a trip to the beach or a refreshing waterfall.
Care projects are great for Social Work, Child Development, Education, or Psychology majors looking for some field experience, or any student who wants to add some service work to a resume in a fun and different way.
If you have time you can do this project for a second week at the regular 2-week trip price.
Projects Abroad Mandeville staff did a great job at making sure we were safe, comfortable and happy. They were always available to chat if we needed advice (both before and during the trip) and also organized amazing events for us like our fruit tasting, waterfall trip and reggae dance class! It was hard to leave after only a week but if given the opportunity again, I'd go back tomorrow! Read more...
