Sports in Fiji are extremely popular and there are many children and young adults who want to participate, but a lack of resources means that their opportunities are limited. Through our Physical Education project, young players are given a chance to take part. Whatever your skills, with energy and enthusiasm you can coach children the sport you love or you can help with a range of games and general fitness sessions.
Teaching Physical Education with Projects Abroad in Fiji
Projects Abroad works with several schools to help develop the physical education program. You will work with children and teenagers from the ages of 6 to 17 years old, who take part in physical education classes throughout the week.
Volunteers are involved with coaching a variety of sports including rugby, soccer, cricket, basketball, and track and field. You will also assist with planning the sessions with the ultimate goal of improving general fitness, technique, and team involvement. Coaching specific sports depends on the time of the year and the sports season for the local elementary and high school. Coaching may also require you to spend extra time at the placement in the afternoons.
The children taking part in the sports sessions are often split into small groups and rotated around. As a volunteer PE teacher, you will need to be prepared to work in small group settings with participants who are different ages and who have different abilities and levels of fitness.
The training sessions are held in the afternoons so many volunteers choose to combine this project with Care or Teaching work. Please let us know when you apply if this is something you would like to do.
As a volunteer PE teacher, you will be focusing on the Physical Education part of the PEMAC (Physical Education, Music, or Arts & Craft) program. You will work as a Projects Abroad Assistant PE teacher and you are encouraged to coach elementary and high school students on the basics of various sports according to the school’s program.
Your Role as a Volunteer Physical Education Teacher in Fiji
Regardless of the sport you are teaching, you will help to develop student's basic skills and techniques. Once you arrive in Fiji, you will be introduced to the school supervisor to discuss and plan how to best utilize your skills and resources. You will also be involved in coordinating and planning coaching sessions.
You will also be assisting the local PE teachers in raising awareness for a healthy lifestyle through physical activities. In addition, you will have a chance to develop activities for all age groups to be involved in during the PE classes.
Participants are usually divided according to age and ability levels. You will find that each student is different, and they will benefit greatly from your specialized care and attention to improve their performance. In turn, this will benefit the performance of the team as a whole.
We emphasize enjoyment and participation and your role will be to help make sure the fun and enthusiasm continues. As a volunteer from a foreign country, your presence helps to make each sports session enjoyable - which is vital to maintaining the interest of the participants.
You can join the Physical Education project in Fiji for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host schools and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local schools please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
While you’re in Fiji, you might also consider joining a 1 week Culture & Community Project. For more information, please visit our Community Village Project in Fiji page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
