By volunteering with Projects Abroad on an After School Sports project in Ecuador you can help with the youth development and fitness of enthusiastic local children and teens in a range of sports. Sports are extremely popular in Ecuador and there are many children wishing to participate, but due to a lack of resources their opportunities are limited.
Through our Sports project young players are given a chance be involved. Whatever your skills, with energy and enthusiasm you can share your passion for sports with the children and help with a range of games and general fitness sessions.
Coaching Sports in Ecuador
Projects Abroad works with several community-run sports clubs, providing free sports lessons to children, teenagers, and adults. Volunteers usually help with coaching the younger children and teenagers aged between 8 and 16 years old.
Volunteers are mainly involved with coaching basketball, soccer, Zumba or Taekwondo, and planning training activities geared toward improving general fitness, technique, and teamwork among the players. If you have particular activities or sports you would like to coach please let us know.
If you join this project to volunteer teaching Zumba, it is beneficial for you to have basic Zumba skills, although this is not a requirement. Zumba is taught to children as well as adults, as people of all ages from the local community enjoy taking part in these activities.
If you sign up as a volunteer to teach Taekwondo, you will work with a local instructor who will assist you with the sessions. It will also be beneficial for you to have some experience or training in this martial art to take part in this project.
At the sports clubs the children are split into smaller groups and rotated around, so as a volunteer you need to be prepared to work with smaller groups of children who all have different abilities and levels of fitness.
Your Role Volunteering Abroad on a Sports Project in Ecuador
Regardless of the sport you are teaching, you will help to develop students’ basic skills and techniques. Once you arrive on the Galapagos Islands, you will be introduced to the students and your supervisor. You will work with the local teacher to help co-ordinate and plan coaching sessions.
There are typically about 12 students to a group divided by age and ability. You will find that every student is different and they will greatly benefit from your specialized care and attention to improve their performance. In turn this will benefit the performance of the team as a whole.
Emphasis is also put on enjoyment and participation. The students attending these sports clubs have a real passion for athletics. Your role, therefore, will be to help make sure the fun and enthusiasm continues in a productive way. As a foreigner your very presence will help to make each activity enjoyable and will motivate the children to be active and work together as a team. Whether you have coaching experience or just love sports, you can play a major part in this helping the children mature as individuals and part of a group.
The sports coaches do not speak English so you will need to be prepared to learn some basic Spanish before you come and get involved as much as possible.
The training sessions are held in the afternoons so many volunteers choose to combine this project with a Care or Teaching project. Please let us know when you apply if this is something you would like to do.
This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
All volunteers participating on standard projects in Ecuador have the opportunity to spend one week on a Conservation & Environment project at the end of their main placement. For more information, please visit our Galapagos Island Conservation & Environment Project in Ecuador page. Our Combinations Page explains how you can combine not only projects, but also destinations.
