Malnutrition is becoming a major concern in Bolivia and is affecting an increasing number of disadvantaged children. As a Projects Abroad intern, you will work to improve nutritional awareness at Centro de Nutrición Infantil Albina, a nutritional day care center based in Cochabamba. The center aims to support families in the impoverished Cerro Verd community who have been affected by malnutrition and who suffer from nutritional deficiencies.

The goal of this program is to alleviate malnourishment by improving nutritional awareness and it will give you the benefit of practical experience in nutritional work in a developing country. Not only will you gain useful experience, but you will also make a significant and lasting impact on children’s lives and the community. No previous experience is necessary and you can get involved as part of a gap year, career break, or volunteer vacation.

To participate on this project, you will need to speak an intermediate level of Spanish.

Interning in Bolivia on the Nutrition Project

Currently, it is estimated that one in every three children in Bolivia suffers from malnutrition. This is the second highest amount in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is believed that poverty, poor health systems, and the lack of awareness relating to nutrition are all factors influencing the increase of malnourishment in Bolivia.

As an intern on this placement, you will work primarily in the city of Cochabamba and will be based at Centro de Nutrición Infantil Albina. Your work will consist of rehabilitating and caring for children, outreach work, and providing education through awareness campaigns to help the community overcome the ever growing problem of malnutrition and nutritional deficiencies.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Bolivia Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

You will work in the mornings from 8am until noon and again in the afternoons from 2pm to 6pm. Your schedule may vary depending on the needs of the center.

Your Role as an Intern on the Nutrition Project

Nutrition interns will have the opportunity to take on three roles within this nutritional program.

In Cochabamba, the majority of interns will spend their time working directly with malnourished children who have been brought to the center by their parents. Interns will spend quality time with the children and feed them on a daily basis until they recover and can return home to their parents.

The second role of interns is to assist staff by carrying out outreach programs (home visits) to check up on children that have left the center. These visits will confirm if parents are following the diets given to them and check if any new cases of malnutrition have occurred. Interns also get involved with creating nutrition awareness campaigns for the Cerro Verde community.

If you have qualifications or experience in this field then we can make use of your skills. Read more about the opportunities for skilled volunteers in Bolivia.
