Interning with Projects Abroad on a Medicine internship in Bangladesh is an opportunity for you to gain valuable practical experience and learn about the healthcare in a developing country firsthand. You will also be able to observe a number of diseases that are prevalent in Bangladesh, but uncommon in North America and Europe.
You will be based at a public hospital in Dhaka, a city of more than 14 million people. Unfortunately, accessing medical care is difficult: it is estimated that there is only one medical doctor for every 3200 people and one hospital bed for every 1738 people. One of the goals of our Medicine Project is to improve the overall standard and access to healthcare in Dhaka through awareness, prevention, and treatment, so you will have a vital role to play during your internship.
You do not need previous experience to participate. We encourage you to ask questions, take notes, and be as proactive as possible to get the most out of your internship. Many of our more experienced interns are also happy to share their knowledge and advice – this is a great opportunity to get to know your fellow interns and colleagues and initiate discussion around different medical practices.
Interning on a Medicine Project in Dhaka
While working at a public hospital, you will spend time in various departments, such as general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics. You will shadow a local doctor, who will be eager to teach you as much as possible about medical practices in Bangladesh.
Our local staff will organize regular outreach programs in Dhaka. Through these initiatives, which include health awareness presentations, you will be able to help the local people learn how to live a healthy lifestyle. Before participating in these outreaches, you will receive comprehensive training from a healthcare professional. Then, you will be able to offer free healthcare assistance to those who may not have easy access to the local services.
Medicine internships in Bangladesh are available for shorter periods than 4 weeks. While you will be able to gain valuable medical experience on a short-term trip, we recommend staying for a longer period to allow yourself more time to get to know the local medical system, see more of a variety of conditions and procedures, and develop stronger relationships with local medical staff.
