Is coaching sports in Argentina right for me?

Are you a keen sportsman/woman? Do you enjoy working with children? Are you passionate about helping nurture their talents? Then volunteering as a sports coach in Argentina is perfect for you!

We have partnered with a community sports initiative that provide free football and hockey lessons to children from impoverished families. Your role will be to build their confidence, develop their ability, and encourage them to keep fit.

It’s also an excellent opportunity for you to refine your own skills and gain experience in sports coaching. Don't worry if you have little or no coaching experience. You will be working with local coaches who are dedicated to their programmes and very open to volunteers. They will help you in any way they can. Projects Abroad staff will also be there to help you.

This project runs throughout the year and you can join at any time. You will need to be able to spend at least two weeks on the project, and can stay as long as you like.

What will I do as a volunteer sports coach in Argentina?

As a volunteer teaching sports in Argentina, you will work at a community sports initiative in Cordoba. They provide free training in various sports to children from disadvantaged families. Here are some of the tasks you can expect to do during your placement.

  • Provide free sports lessons to children from disadvantaged families for three hours per day
  • Work with the local teacher to help coordinate and plan coaching sessions for two hours per day
  • Expand your horizons by learning new skills

Provide free sports lessons

The most important aspect of your time in Argentina is coaching young children. You will mainly teach football and basketball. There may also be opportunities to practice hockey, swimming, and gymnastics with the children.

Help the local teacher coordinate coaching sessions

You will work closely with local teachers to plan your coaching sessions. They know the children you will be working with very well and will be able to guide you in different approaches. They are also typically experienced coaches, so will be able to offer you some invaluable insights.

Expand your horizons by learning new skills

Whether you have coaching experience or not, this project will offer loads of opportunity to broaden your skill set. Firstly, you will be working alongside experienced local coaches, who will be able to advise you on improving your own techniques. Secondly, living in Argentina is an excellent opportunity to learn Spanish or improve on your language skills if you already speak it.

Where you will be working as a Sports Club volunteer in Argentina

Cordoba

You will be based in Cordoba, a city of natural beauty and historical significance with a true zest for life. This is best expressed in its vibrant party scene and colourful street art.

With a population of about 1.3 million, Cordoba is the second largest city in Argentina and home to a truly eclectic mix of cultures. These cultures include various indigenous tribes, Italian-Argentines, Spanish-Argentines, and immigrants from all corners of Europe.

Your working day will be spent at our partner sports club. There is definitely an emphasis on football, but children who attend for free are encouraged to nurture a wide range of sporting abilities. You will gain invaluable hands-on sports coaching experience while in Argentina

In the evenings and on weekends, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the town and plan exciting trips with other volunteers.

Airport pickup, flights and visas

Volunteers on this project arrive at Córdoba International Airport (COR). A Projects Abroad staff member will be waiting to greet you when you arrive. You can find more detailed information on flights, arrival airports, orientation, and visas, on our Argentina Arrival Procedures page.

A typical day as a Sports Club volunteer in Argentina

You will start your mornings with a hearty breakfast in your host family’s home. From here, you will make use of public transport to get to the Club Atlético Racing around 10am. One your first day, our staff will show you how to get there.

The first two hours of your working day will be dedicated to meeting with the local teachers to help coordinate and plan coaching sessions. These meetings will also be a useful time to discuss team selections and match strategies.

At around 12pm, you will get an hour and a half lunch break. If your host family lives close enough, you can head home to eat and rest for a bit. Alternatively, you will enjoy a packed lunch at the club.

As schools close for the day, children will start arriving at the club in the afternoon. This is when the fun begins! You will spend the rest of the day helping them develop basic skills and techniques. If you’re a football fanatic, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to share your passion here. However, there are also opportunities to coach basketball, hockey, swimming, and gymnastics.

You may be asked to help out at games on certain evenings and weekends, or even join in a game yourself. However, you will also get plenty of free time to explore with your fellow volunteers and get to know your host family.

Cordoba is a vibrant city with loads of interesting restaurants to try out. If you have a whole weekend free, you can even head further up the coast for a trip. There are many adventures to be had!

What are the aims and impacts of our Sports Coaching Project in Argentina?

The main aim of this project is to help disadvantaged youth learn important life skills through sports.

Sport in Argentina is extremely popular. There are so many children wishing to participate, but due to a lack of resources, opportunity is limited. The club we work with provides disadvantaged children with free lessons, giving them a chance to participate. We need your help coach these children.

Through this project, you can dedicate your time, energy, and skills to coaching children and help them to improve their abilities and technique. You’ll find that every student is different. However, each one will greatly benefit from your coaching to improve their performance.

Join us in Argentina today to help improve the lives of young people through sport.

Measuring our impact

Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.

Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.

Food and accommodation

You'll stay with a host family in Córdoba. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of Argentina and have a truly unique experience.

We will always try to let you live alongside at least one other Projects Abroad volunteer or intern at the same host family. Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe.

Your programme fee includes three meals a day.

Leisure activities and free time

Argentina is a vibrant South American country bursting with colour and rich heritage. Along with contributing to worthwhile projects, a trip with us to Argentina means you can explore this fascinating country.

Enjoying a coffee at the Plaza de San Martin, with its street performers and iconic statue of General Jose de San Martin, is the perfect way to spend an evening. It’s located in Cordoba, where our projects are based, so you don’t have to travel far for this experience.

For thrill seekers, you can take a weekend trip to La Cumbre where you can go paragliding off lofty cliffs. The surrounding nature is breathtaking and a horse ride around nature trails here is well worth it.

There are also enriching cultural experiences, like the Evita Fine Arts Museum or the Teatro del Libertador General San Martin. You can also learn more about the country’s history at local museums.

There will likely be other volunteers in Argentina with you. So you can choose to explore solo, or with a group of volunteers from different projects.

Safety and staff support

Your safety and security is our prime concern. We have many procedures and systems to ensure you have the support you need to enjoy your trip with peace of mind. Our Projects Abroad staff are available 24 hours a day to help, and will be on hand to make sure you settle in well at your accommodation and placement.
