Public Health in the Philippines followed by Nutrition in Fiji

Projects Abroad volunteer helps take vitals of a local on a nutrition outreach in Fiji

Volunteer on a healthy lifestyle program in the Philippines designed to reduce local cases of non-communicable diseases and then travel to Fiji to help local villagers learn about and meet healthy living challenges.

Projects Abroad is based in Cebu, Philippines and Nadi, Fiji

When to go:

Visit the Philippines during the end of their dry season in April, and then travel to Fiji as their dry season is beginning, in May.

How long:

We recommend spending at least 7 weeks total- 4 weeks in the Philippines followed by 3 weeks in Fiji.

Program description:

Our Philippines Public Health program is based in and around the city of Bogo, in the northern part of Cebu Island where typhoon Haiyan hit in November 2013. This project is in partnership with the City Health Office of Bogo that has a reach of 29 barangays (villages/communities). We aim to reduce the risk and number of cases of non-communicable diseases in the area such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

According to the department of health in the Philippines, 7 out of the 10 leading causes of death in the country today are non-communicable diseases. These are related to common and preventable biological risk-factors including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and being overweight. These factors are then compounded by behavioral risk factors including:

  • Unhealthy diet
  • Physical inactivity
  • Tobacco, alcohol and drug use.

Volunteers work alongside local health care professionals who lead different family-based and village-based activities. Public Health volunteers are engaged in many programs, such as:

  • Village Health Screening & Family Health Mapping
  • Family Health Empowering Program
  • Eating Real Food Challenge
  • Healthy Cooking Recipe Books Compilation
  • Smoking Survey and Anti-Smoking Campaign
  • Alcohol Consumption Survey and Cessation Campaign.

Next, travel to the city of Nadi based on Fiji’s largest island, Viti Levu. Our Nutrition program here is based in villages just outside the city. No experience is required, but those with prior experience in the field of nutrition or healthcare will see their skills put to use!

The project focuses on creating healthy-living challenges for villagers who suffer from health problems due to poor diet and inactivity. We run 21-day challenges that focus on general health assessments and set goals focused on data collected on weight, height, and blood pressure. Volunteers help run workshops that focus on:

  • Diet and nutrition
  • The importance of exercise and maintaining an active lifestyle
  • Sexual health

Workshops on healthy eating, sexual health, and physical activity are also incorporated into community outreaches designed to educate local school children.

Volunteers can spend their free time exploring the beautiful islands and beaches that Fiji and the Philippines are known for.
