Liam Farncombe - Diving & Marine Conservation in Thailand
Liam Farncombe has been working on our conservation project in Thailand since the end of May and has recently extended his time by a further two months. Here he tells us about his time so far:
Originally I applied to Projects Abroad as I wanted to take a career break. I have always wanted to come to Thailand and the prospect to getting involved in conservation work and combining that with diving was very exciting.
The conservation project is based in the Krabi province which lies on the island-studded Andaman Coast, 2 hours south of Bangkok by plane. I have been amazed by the beauty of Krabi and the warmth and friendliness of the many Thai people I have met here. I have also been given excellent personal support for the Projects Abroad staff here.
The conservation project has offered me more than I could hope to get out of it. I had passed my Open Water Diver Certification before I arrived, and through Projects Abroad have passed both my Advanced and Rescue Diver Certifications here, which has given me the competence to make a real difference here.
So far I have done a lot of underwater clean up work, removing fishing nets and debris from the reefs, I have been involved in beach clean-up operations, and I have got actively involved in the global Reef Check project, which involves monitoring local reefs to assess the threats to marine life and make decisions on what can be done to protect the reefs.
The Projects Abroad staff here have been working for years in conjunction with Thailand Marine National Parks, and have a superb understanding of the local ecosystems which means the volunteers quickly understand the needs of the area and can make an active difference, which for me has been very satisfying. In addition, the spectacular marine life here has made diving a bit of an addiction for me !
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here for so many reasons, particularly what I have achieved and the new perspective on things which the Thai culture offers. I have not anyone here who does not enjoy Thailand, and would be confident recommending it as a location to absolutely anyone. And with so much more to see and do, I plan to be here for as long as possible.
