Community Building Project in Jamaica
Volunteers are needed in Jamaica to work on a Community Building Project, helping to repair homes and build sanitation and housing solutions for the poor in Manchester Parish. Volunteers work alongside the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) as part of a dedicated team doing minor repairs to aluminium roofs, putting in louver windows, mixing mortar, laying blocks, and carrying sand, cement, water, and stones. Volunteers sometimes have to travel out to other parishes as well with their placement supervisor.
Jamaica is a tropical island which is situated on the hurricane belt. Records from as early as the 1780s show that hurricanes have been wreaking untold havoc on the infrastructure of this developing country. In 2008 hurricane Gustav claimed fifteen lives and flooded homes, businesses, and streets in St. Thomas, St. Mary, and Portland, leaving in its wake $210,000,000 of damage.
We are constantly looking at preventative measures to lessen the impact of hurricanes on the poor and the vulnerable. This led to the partnership of Projects Abroad Jamaica and ADRA, two organisations which share a similar vision. ADRA International operates as an independent humanitarian agency established in 1984 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. ADRA's development and relief work covers five core activities: Food Security, Economic Development, Primary Health, Disaster Preparedness and Response, and Basic Education. ADRA is proud of the fact that they are not an agency for just providing handouts, but they work at finding solutions and training staff.
Volunteer Constructing Houses in Local Communities
The collaboration of Projects Abroad Jamaica and ADRA is changing the lives of the poor and needy by repairing and building homes. Come and be a part of this life-changing experience by making a valuable contribution to improve the standard of living of those in need. You don’t need a degree in engineering or to be a skilled builder, but if you do possess any of these skills then your expertise will come in handy.
Volunteers live with host families in Mandeville and are provided with support from ADRA and Projects Abroad staff in Jamaica.
This project is available for less than a month if you don't have time to join us for a month or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for shorter durations for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
