Volunteer Abroad in Mozambique

Mozambique

Mozambique is Africa’s up-and-coming must-visit destination and spending some time here on a volunteer project will let you experience all aspects of this enticing country. Our projects in Mozambique are available for anyone interested in volunteering in the developing world, including those on a gap year, between semesters, or on a career break.

Projects Abroad offers Teaching, Care and Conservation projects in Mozambique, based in and around the town of Vilanculos on the southern coast. Friendly Locals Vilanculos is one of Mozambique’s most visited towns due to its close proximity to the stunning waters of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Tourism now plays a significant role in the town’s economy, making it increasingly important for the local people to speak English. The need for conservation work in the area is also growing as more development of the coastline takes place.

All Projects Abroad volunteers in Mozambique live together in a shared house.

Mozambique is a vibrant country on the southeast coast of Africa. Having emerged from a difficult past its people are friendly, welcoming, and upbeat about the future. With over 2500 kilometers of coastline, Mozambique’s white-sand beaches and turquoise seas teaming with wildlife are a big attraction.

Mozambique became independent from Portugal in 1975, but its first 25 years of independence were far from easy with virtually no infrastructure, widespread poverty, and years of guerrilla warfare. The past ten years have seen great improvements, with peaceful democratic elections and the development of new roads and a solid tourist infrastructure.

However, Mozambique still has a long way to go. It currently comes 172nd out of 182 countries in the United Nations Human Development Index, which takes into account education, economy, and life expectancy.

Living in Mozambique will certainly provide you with plenty of interesting things to do when you’re not working. The colorful markets are overflowing with fabrics and traditional African carvings and jewelry. Plus some of the best diving and snorkeling is right at your doorstep.

Travelling around Mozambique has improved significantly over recent years. Though not always fast, buses between the main towns are a cheap way to explore the country. Maputo is worth a weekend trip to enjoy the culture and laid-back street cafes of the capital city.

Adding some extra travel time at the end of your project will give you a wide variety of further travel options, with regular bus access to neighboring Malawi, Tanzania, Swaziland, South Africa, and Zambia.
