Volunteer as a Medicine Intern in Ethiopia with Projects Abroad

Interning abroad on a medical placement in Ethiopia with Projects Abroad is an excellent way to learn about and experience a hospital environment in a developing country. You will gain a great deal of valuable work experience alongside some of the most skilled and inspirational doctors in the country.
All Medicine interns must have completed at least one year of medicine-related studies by the time they take part on this project. We will request to see a copy of your resume once you have applied, so your placement can be tailored to your level of experience and interests.
Interns work at The Hayat General Hospital, which is a relatively new private hospital in Addis Ababa, providing care to over 100 patients each day. Your exact role within the hospital will be determined by your level of medical experience as well as the enthusiasm and effort that you demonstrate to the local staff.
You will have the opportunity to shadow doctors in a variety of departments and learn about many different conditions and treatments. You should be prepared to see some shocking cases and will learn about conditions that are rare in developed countries. There will also be the opportunity to get involved in occasional community outreach work.
If you are a fully qualified doctor or nurse then you will also have the opportunity to work at Sante Medical Clinic.
Physical Therapy Internships in Ethiopia

There is a real shortage of skilled physical therapists in Ethiopia. If you're currently training, a recently qualified physical therapist, or on a career break, you'll provide valuable support to healthcare workers and the families of people affected by HIV.
The experience you can gain on this physical therapy internship will really help you get an idea of how a successful community based healthcare program works while delivering physical therapy treatment. Since a portion of your time will be spent passing on your skills to fellow caregivers, you'll go home knowing that you've made a real contribution to this project and the people it serves.
As a physical therapy intern, you'll work alongside a charity based in Addis Ababa that provides advice, healthcare and education to families living with HIV. This is a highly progressive project that aims to increase people's knowledge and understanding of the disease as well as provide practical physical therapy care to terminally ill children.
In the morning you'll usually travel around Addis carrying out home-based care alongside a small team of local staff. You'll visit families in their homes and treat patients with common illnesses who have TB or unexplained paralysis. You'll help carry out and explain simple exercises to family members that will enable them to keep them up until your next visit. Afternoons will frequently be spent working alongside the local physical therapy staff as you pass on your skills and knowledge.
Interns also have the opportunity to work at another charity treatment center which provides treatment to over 120 patients. Interns are involved in all aspects of patient care as well as providing advice and training to the family members of the patient.
This program is one where you can make a difference while gaining worthwhile work experience in another culture.
